Awesome day out in Porterville

Posted by Administrator on Mon, Nov 01 2010 11:11:00

We have had quite a lot of windy weather lately so like the good, dedicated paraglider pilots we are....we chase the weather. Saturday found us sitting in Hermanus, clouded in, raining...bugger. The coffee was good and the whales were going crazy, leaping out of the sea.

Anyway, Sunday, bright and early we loaded up the car and headed for Porterville. Most of the Cape Town pilots had the same idea and Pete, Stephan, Gerard, Gaynor (aka Flygirl) and Barry were a few of the familiar faces out there.

The day was slow to start and we scratched for about half an hour just trying to stay up. Wayne bombed out but we managed to hang in there. Then the day started improving and we got some solid climbs up to about 5 or 600m above take-off (not sure exactly cos I wasn't looking at my vario, just listening to it tweet).

Citrusdal was in gliding distance when my passenger started complaining that he was feeling a bit air sick. So, although we were at the front of the pack and at the top of it, we turned around and headed for the road. An hour and a half later and about 20km down the ridge, we landed and packed up. Wayne and Willy (who had gone back up for a second flight came flying overhead soon after and landed in the same field.

Both pilots were still gagging to be in the air but we had had a great day and we headed back to Cape Town.

Good Paragliding Weather This Weekend

Posted by Administrator on Sat, Oct 16 2010 06:36:00

So, after nearly a week of windy weather and rain we have four days of forecasted good paragliding weather in Cape Town. This Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday are all looking awesome!

That said, we did have great flying in Hermanus yesterday when it was blown out in Cape Town.

Come on an XC Paragliding Adventure

Posted by Administrator on Sun, Oct 10 2010 15:37:00

The XC Paragliding Adventure gives you a real taste of what paragliding is all about.

We travel to Porterville in search of wide open space, big climbs, big mountains and insane views of the Cedarberg mountain range.

The XC Adventure is a full day tour so don't make any other plans (maybe dinner arrangements after 7pm).
We leave Cape Town at 8am sharp and arrive at our launch (Pampoenfontein) just before 10am.
Upon arriving you have time to relax, walk around, have a bit to eat (we provide snacks and refreshments) and soak up the views. We then brief you on what to expect and what is expected of you, a bit of paperwork and its time to go!

We pull on the glider, it rises over head and after a short run we are flying! Searching for lift by flying along the ridge we soon find a thermal and start turning. The other tandem pilot joins us as we circle in the lift and you watch as the ground drops further and further below.
Once we reach the top of the thermal we set off on a glide (usually heading North towards Citrusdal).

The flight can last anything from 1-3 hours. If you are prone to motion sickness it might be best to go for the Cape Town paragliding experience where the air is smooth and stable. If you love adventure and freeflight then you will love this experience. Your experienced and fully certified tandem pilot will show you the true potential of paragliding in this world renowned cross country paragliding site.
